Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The Supreme Court has rejected the order for a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) inquiry into the attack on Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and BJP MP from Coochbehar, Nishith Pramanik. The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI inquiry into the matter on 28th March, but the Supreme Court has now asked the High Court to reconsider its decision.
During the hearing, Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi represented the state and argued that the state police was suitable to investigate the incident. However, the lawyer representing the other side questioned the court and alleged that the police had arrested selected BJP workers despite Trinamool supporters being accused in the attack on the convoy.
After hearing both sides, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that the High Court had made its decision based on the preliminary report of the incident, but it had not seen the steps taken by the police. Therefore, the matter should go back to the High Court, he said. He also expressed hope that the police would submit the latest report of the incident to the court.
The attack on Nishith Pramanik's convoy occurred in March, and it was alleged that Trinamool supporters were responsible for it. The Calcutta High Court's decision to order a CBI inquiry into the matter was seen as a significant development in the case, but now it remains to be seen what the High Court's decision will be after reconsidering the matter.
